I am using Runner's Log (or Cyclist's Log) for the Palm OS and
the Summary screen doesn't show the correct count or statistics for the
time period that I have selected. What's the problem?
|
| A: |
The most common reason this happens is because you have selected a
particular Category on the Summary screen, and not all of the entries
for the time period you have selected are assigned to that same
Category. For example, if some of the entries are assigned to the
"Yourname" category but others are assigned to
"Untitled" and you have selected "Yourname" from the
category list at the upper-right corner of the Summary screen, then the
program will ignore all of the "Untitled" entries when it
compiles the statistics.
The second most common explanation very similar. If you have
selected Equipment summary or Event summary, the program will ignore any
entries for the time period you have selected that aren't assigned to
that Equipment item or Event item respectively.
In either case, the solution is to either re-assign the category for
each entry that is missing from the Summary (by tapping on the entry
from the Log screen, then tapping the menu icon and choosing "Set
Category...") or by simply selecting "All" from the
category list (or Equipment list, or Event list...) on the Summary
screen. |
Q:
|
I just received my registration code but the
program won't accept it. What's wrong?
|
| A: |
There are two common explanations for this:
1. You have entered a small "L" as a number 1 or as a capital
"i". Note that the registration code is composed entirely of
lower-case letters.
2. I received the wrong HotSync ID with your registration information.
The registration code is derived from your unique HotSync ID. Even a
missing "space", decimal, or swapped capital/lowercase letter
will change the registration code. Please check your HotSync ID (you can
view it on the Register screen of the program) and email me the exact
string. I will then re-generate your registration code and send it right
back to you.

An explanation of how calorie estimation works, instructions and a
list of coefficients can all be found here.

I am using Runner's Log (or Cyclist's Log) for the Palm OS.
How do I create my own equipment items so that I can track things like
the distance in a pair of shoes or my average speed on my favorite bike?
|
| A: |
To create a new equipment item, tap
the "new" button from either the log screen or the summary
screen, and then tap the equipment field to the right of
"Equipment:" (near the bottom of the screen). One of
the choices that should appear is "Edit Equipment List...".
Tap that, which will activate the equipment list edit screen.
From there you can tap "New" to add an item to the list.
When you return to the log entry screen, your new equipment item
should appear in the list when you tap it.

Q:
|
I misspelled a location - how do I remove it
from the location list?
|
| A: |
The list of locations is managed automatically by
the program by putting the most recently used location at the top of the
list each time you add an entry to the log. When the list fills up (10
items), the program begins "dropping" the least used items
from the bottom of the list. Therefore, all you need to do is re-enter
the location that you misspelled and eventually the misspelled version
will be removed from the list.

Q:

The program won't let me enter a weight
greater than 275lbs. Is this a bug?
|
| A: |
No, this isn't a bug. The program can store weight
as either pounds or kg in the range of 20-275. This is a direct result
of my efforts to keep the database size small so that each entry takes
as little precious Palm memory as possible. The good news is that you
CAN record weights greater than 275lbs - you just need to convert them
to kg first. To do this, divide your weight in lbs by 2.2, then enter
the resulting number and check the "kg" button next to the
weight. This technique extends the capability of the program up to
605lbs (275kg).

Q:
|
How do I upgrade to the latest version of the application without losing all the data I've entered?
|
| A: |
Just download
the program and re-install the PRC file "over" the
existing version on your handheld device. The log data (and program
preferences) will not be disturbed this way. Don't delete the program
from your handheld device first - that will also remove (delete) your
log data and program preferences.
|
Q:
|
Oops, I deleted the program from my Palm
device. Can I recover my log data or am I doomed?
|
| A: |
Each time you HotSync with your desktop computer,
a backup copy of your log data is made to a special "Backup"
directory on your computer. In this folder you will find the last backup
of the log database:
| For... |
The log database filename is |
| Runner's Log |
RunnersLogDB.pdb |
| Cyclist's Log |
CyclistsLogDB.pdb |
| Swimmer's Log |
SwimmersLogDB.pdb |
To restore
this data to your handheld device, simply install the file just like you
would a program (PRC) file after you have re-installed the Runner's Log
program file (RunLog.prc).

Q:
|
I am new to this Palm stuff - how do I get
Runner's Log installed on my Palm device?
|
| A: |
Installing the application on your Palm-compatible
device can be accomplished in three steps:
1. Download the RunLog.zip file. This step involves
transfering the file from some internet site to your desktop computer
(generally a PC or Mac). This file (called a "zip" file)
contains three other files, that have been compressed to make the file
smaller and combined into one file so that you only have to download one
thing. You can download the file directly from this site by clicking the
"Download Latest" button at the bottom of the page. When you
do, you will be asked if you want to Save the file or Run it. You should
select "Save" and then choose a location on your local
computer's hard disk where you will be able to locate the file later.
The download process should only take a minute or less, because the file
is relatively small.
2. Un-Zip the RunLog.zip file. This step is performed in order
to "extract" the files that are contained in the zip file so
that you can use them. There are three files inside the zip file - the
"readme" file which is a text document that contains notes
about each revision of the application, the user's guide which is a PDF
file (more about that later) and the program file itself (it ends in a .PRC).
On most computers, you can double-click on the zip file and an
un-zipping application will automatically launch. On some machines, you
will have to start your unzip application manually and then open the
RunLog.zip file. Or, you may not have an application installed at all
that can unzip the file in which case you will need to download one. If
this is the case, when you double-click on the zip file you may get the
"Open With..." window (in Windows) or your computer may
actually try to open the zip file with a different application (such as
QuickTime). If this happens, you will probably need to download and
install a program to unzip the file. A very popular shareware
application for this purpose is WinZip. You can find that at www.WinZip.com.
3. Install the RunnersLog.prc file on your Palm device. The
purpose of this step is obvious. It involves transferring the program
file from your desktop computer to your Palm device. On most systems,
you can simply double-click on the PRC file, click OK, and then perform
a HotSync. Otherwise, you will need to start the Palm Desktop
application, click the "Install" button, and then click the
"Add" button. Then navigate to where you stored the PRC file
on your computer's hard disk and select the PRC file. After this is
complete, HotSync your Palm device and the program should then be
available for use on your Palm.

Q:

How do I view the User's Guide? What is a PDF
file?
|
| A: |
The User's Guide is formated as a PDF file, which
stands for "Portable Document Format". If you have the Adobe
PDF Reader installed on your computer, you should be able to simply
double-click on the PDF file icon to open and view the User's Guide. If
that does not work or you do not have the Adobe PDF Reader, you can
download it at Adobe.com (click the
"Get Acrobat Reader" button at the bottom of the page). The
reader is free.

Q:
|
What happens at the end of 30 days if I don't register?
|
| A: |
At the end of the trial 30 day period, the program will stop accepting
new entries. Any existing log entries will remain intact and you
can still view the log screen and the summary screen.

Q:
|
I am not sure what my HotSync ID is. How do I find it?
|
| A: |
To locate the HotSync ID for your Palm OS handheld device:
- Tap the Home icon.
- From the Categories menu in the upper right hand corner, choose
All.
- Tap the "HotSync" icon. The HotSync ID will be displayed
in the upper right hand corner, as shown in the sample below:
